How Effective Is UV Sterilization?

UV light has been proven to have a powerful germicidal effect dating back to the late 19th century when Downes & Blunt conducted the first scientific study showing the effectiveness of UV light sterilization in 1877. As detailed in the public health report The History of Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation for Air Disinfection, it took decades for the scientific and medical community to further research and understand the powerful effectiveness of UV light.

Niels Fenson was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1903 for his contribution to the treatment of disease with concentrated UV light. In the 1930s, William Wells demonstrated the ability of UV germicidal irradiation to prevent the spread of airborne disease.

Although these early UV light for sterilization proved successful, interest in the medical use of  UV light and further research waned until the 1980s, partly due to the increase in tuberculosis (TB). According to Controlling the Spread of TB with UV Exposure by the Lighting Research Centre at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, UV germicidal lamps have been shown to be very effective in eliminating TB when used in wall-mounted upper room UVC GI air purification systems.

Effectiveness of UV Light Germicidal Sterilization

Ultraviolet radiation provides maximum germicidal effect when emitted at the optimum wavelength of 253.7 nanometres (nm) to inactivate microorganisms, known as ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI). When emitted at non-optimal wavelengths, the germicidal effect is reduced. This is why it is important to have a high quality UV sterilization lamp that can effectively deliver the right amount of UV radiation for the desired application.

UV sterilization effectively inactivates microorganisms by destroying the DNA of cells, which is responsible for cell replication, so destroying the structure of the DNA prevents the cells from replicating and spreading disease. UV photons are absorbed by the cells, producing pyrimidine dimers. This causes two adjacent thymine or cytosine bases to bind to each other, rather than spanning the double helix as they normally would.

DNA molecules containing pyrimidine dimers do not function properly, resulting in the death or inability of the organism to replicate. An organism that cannot replicate no longer has the ability to transmit disease.

Benefits of UV Light for Sterilization

UV light sterilization is an environmentally friendly method of killing bacteria, moulds, fungi and viruses without the use of harmful chemicals and without producing corrosive substances or disinfection by-products (DBPs). There are many industries where surface disinfection without the use of chemicals is critical and UV light sterilization can provide a safe and effective solution. UV light disinfection and sterilization systems are proven to be:

Highly effective

Cost effective

Low maintenance costs

Chemical free
