With the epidemic of COVID-19, many people have become more aware of disinfection. We can also see ultraviolet sterilizer lamps in medical places such as wards and operating rooms. So what is a UV sterilizer lamp? Why can ultraviolet sterilizer lamps be disinfected? What should I pay attention to when using UV sterilizer lamps?

What is UV?

Ultraviolet is a kind of light with a wavelength range of 10nm-400nm. According to the wavelength, it is divided into long-wave ultraviolet (UVA), medium-wave ultraviolet (UVB), and short-wave ultraviolet (UVC). The wavelengths are:

UVA: 315nm~400nm;

UVB: 280nm~315nm;

UVC: 100nm~280nm.

UVC can destroy the structure of microbial DNA and RNA, making them lose their reproductive function. The ultraviolet light generated by the ultraviolet disinfection lamp belongs to UVC, so it is widely used in the disinfection of air and surface of objects.

Ultraviolet disinfection lamp is a "cutting edge", which has advantages and disadvantages. It has the advantages of high sterilization efficiency, but improper use can easily cause harm to the human body.

Harm of Ultraviolet

Ultraviolet rays have weak tissue penetration, so they have almost no effect on internal organs and organs. However, excessive exposure to ultraviolet rays can cause damage to the eyes and skin. Eyes exposed to ultraviolet rays can cause conjunctivitis, keratitis, cataracts and even blindness. If the skin is irradiated, redness, swelling, pain, itching, scaling and even skin cancer will appear.

What should I pay attention to when using ultraviolet disinfection?

Spread out objects to disinfect

Ultraviolet rays have weak penetrating power. When disinfecting the surface of an object, it is necessary to spread or hang the object to make it fully irradiated. The disinfection area cannot be covered by other objects.

The disinfection environment should be clean and dry

Each disinfection should last from half an hour to 1 hour. The room should be closed and kept clean and dry during disinfection. When the relative humidity is greater than 60%, the irradiation time should be appropriately extended.

Disinfection in an unmanned environment

Ultraviolet rays are irritating to the eyeballs and skin, so it needs to be disinfected in an unmanned environment. Personnel are strictly prohibited to enter during the disinfection process. Avoid looking directly at the light source during disinfection.

Open windows for ventilation after disinfection

Ultraviolet disinfection will produce ozone, which is harmful to the human body, so it is necessary to open the window for half an hour after disinfection.
